Before the war

In 1860, he was living in the first ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (18). He was a clerk (18).

When he was enlisted, he was a book binder (14, 15) or a clerk (5). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (15).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (5, 14 [5'7"], 15 [5'7-1/2"]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 14, 15). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (14). He served in company A (1).

He was appointed a corporal in company A on 17 October 1861 (13). At some point, he was reduced to the ranks (13).

He sometimes acted as Orderly of the Adjutant's Office (8). On 19 February 1863, because he knew that Morris Kayser had wanted a furlough, and had been reported sick in camp, he checked on Kayser, and was told by the cook of the company's officers' mess that Kayser had left at 6 AM (8).

He went on a nine-day furlough, starting 15 March 1863 (6). He returned on 25 March 1863 (7).

He was a witness to the charges and specifications Joseph Sinex filed against Morris Kayser, and testified in the court martial of Morris Kayser, on 30 July 1863 (2, 8).

On 18 May 1863, he was detailed as an assistant to Dr Caswell [?] (9).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (19).

He returned to the regiment from hospital on 19 December 1863 (10).

On 22 December 1863, he was detailed as clerk at regimental headquarters (3).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 5, 15).

He was promoted on 1 January 1864 to sergeant major (4, 5; 1 [has 15 Jan], 11 [23 Jan], 12 [23 Jan], 15 [15 Jan]).

On 2 May 1864, he was present sick (16). He was absent sick beginning 8 May 1864, until some time after 9 June 1864 (17).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with the regiment (1, 15).

After the war

On 18 August 1876, he died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of disease of the heart (38). He was a clerk (38). He was married (38). He died at, or was buried from, 1308 North 19th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (38). He buried on 21 August 1876, at Mount Vernon Cemetery (38).
