When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [sources: 5, 6]

During the war

He enlisted on 9 August 1861, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He was mustered into service as a private in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry on 1 September 1861. He was a private, in company M. [sources: 1, 6, 9, 11, 12]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 5 February 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Licken Run, Virginia, by Lieutenant Adams. He was mustered in by Captain Gentry. [sources: 5, 6]

On 20 June 1864, he was discharged. [source: 12]

He was transferred to the 91st Pennsylvania. On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G. On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company. He was then absent, as a private. He was a private, in company K.
