Before the war

He was born in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania (5). He was 19 years old when he was enlisted (5 [21 probably in 1864], 6 [19]).

He was a laborer when he was enlisted (5, 6). He was living in Hollidaysburg (6).

Description

He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (5, 6).

During the war

He was enlisted on 9 August 1861, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania (6). He was mustered into service as a private in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry on 1 September 1861 (1, 6).

He was reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 5 February 1864 (5, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Licken Run, Virginia, by Lieutenant Adams (5). He was mustered in by Captain Gentry (5).

He was transferred to the 91st Pennsylvania (1). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (1). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (2). He was then absent, as a private (2).

He was discharged on 25 December 1864, from Armory Square Hospital, Washington DC, on surgeon's certificate of disability (3 [1 Jun 65], 6 [has 23 Dec 64], 7 [25 Dec 64]).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent sick (7).

The regiment was notified of his discharge on 1 June 1865 (7; see also 3).

After the war

On 24 February 1888, he was buried in Union Dale Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (4).
