Charles Lowery

Before the war

He was 19 years old (presumably when he enlisted in 1861) (2, 8). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 8).

He was a wheelwright (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (2 [5'9"], 8 [5'5-1/2"]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 20 September 1861 (1, 2, 8, 10 [10 Aug]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Smith (1, 2, 8). He served as a private in company C (1).

He deserted on 1 June 1862, at Washington, DC (6). He returned from desertion (6).

Gregory described him as "a worthless soldier" who "has always shirked his duty", and "a slippery man" (2). He had never been in action, on 18 November 1863 (2).

He deserted frequently, including on 14 June 1863, while the regiment was marching, near Hartwood [?] Church (2). He was apparently caught in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before 13 September 1863 (2).

On 21 November 1863, he was reported regained from desertion (4).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (3). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (5).

He mustered out near Petersburg, Virginia, on 20 September 1864, when his term expired (1, 7, 8, 10).

After the war

In 1890, his widow, Isabella Lowry, was living at 1 [?] Green Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10).
