Before the war

He was 21 years old when he was enrolled (26, 27, 36 [68 yrs 5 mos 16 dys at death]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Hugh and Winifred Maguigan (26, 36). He was born on 31 May 1841 (36).

He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (27).

Description

He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair (26).

During the war

He also served in the 23rd Pennsylvania Infantry (29). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (30). He was mustered in, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (30). as first sergeant of company I on 18 April 1861 (29, 30 [21 Apr]). He was discharged, as first sergeant, on 19 July 1861 (29, 30 [31 Jul 61]).

He was enlisted and mustered into service in the 91st Pennsylvania on 30 August 1861 (1, 26, 27, 29). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (26, 27). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (27). He served in company C (1).

He was appointed third sergeant on 21 September 1861 (24).

He was promoted to first sergeant (25).

He was promoted on 22 December 1862 from sergeant to second lieutenant, replacing John Sage (1, 11, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28). He was mustered in for three years, at Falmouth, Virginia, by Colonel Garard (28).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (33).

On 29 July 1863, he was ordered (by special order 160, Army of the Potomac) to report to Dr Abbott, in Washington DC, for medical treatment (6, 13, 15).

On 8 August 1863, the regiment reported that they hadn't received any official notice about him for some time (15). On 19 August 1863, the adjutant general's office in Washington DC granted him 20 days leave (6, 14, 16). The regiment received the order on 24 August 1863 (14, 16 [27 Aug]). His leave was to expire on 8 September 1863 (6; see also 12). He did not return on time, but the regiment received a letter about his health, perhaps extending his leave, on 12 September 1863 (17, 18, 12). He was then reported absent with leave (18). He returned to duty on 18 September 1863 (19).

He accompanied picket details on 18 September 1863 (7) and 3 October 1863 (8).

He was commissioned, but not mustered in as, captain, on 22 November 1863 (1; see also 3, 27).

He was reported absent without leave on 20 February 1864, while the regiment was at the Rendezvous in Chester, Pennsylvania (21). He had returned on 21 February 1864 (22).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia (1, 1 [p.192]).

On 25 June 1864, he was in the Naval Academy Hospital, at Annapolis (35).

On 14 August 1864, he returned to the regiment from being absent wounded (31).

As of 7 September 1864, he had not filed an ordnance return for the second quarter of 1864 (9).

On 24 September 1864, he was appointed recorder for a board of survey to determine how much government property John Hamill was responsible for (5).

On 27 September 1864, he was ordered to turn over his surplus ordnance and stores to Eli Sellers (G), John Casner (K), and John Hamill (D) (10).

On 28 September 1864, John Graham was ordered to take command of company C and to receipt to Maguigan for all property (4).

He mustered out when his term expired, on 28 September 1864 (1, 2, 11, 26 [resigned], 27 [refers to SO 10179 3 Aug 1888], 28, 29 [28 Oct 64], 32).

After the war

In 1871, he was the secretary of a meeting setting up the 91st's Survivor's Association (34).

He attended the 1884 meeting of the 91st's Survivors' Association (3).

In 1890, he was living at 2337 Carlisle, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (29).

On 16 November 1909, he died at his residence, 2337 North Carlisle Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of interstitial nephritis (duration five years), with pulmonary edema (duration five days) contributing (36). He was then a clerk (36). He was a widower (36). He was buried on 20 November 1909, in Greenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (36, 37 [19 Nov]).

The following wounded officers have arrived at Annapolis from the army before Petersburg, and are at the Naval Academy Hospital. They were wounded in the assaults on the rebel works:
