Before the war

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts (9, 12, 14). He was 35 years old when he was enlisted (9, 12 [33 in 1860], 14 [43 in 1870]).

In 1860, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was a housepainter (12). He owned $200 in personal property (12). He was living with Marion (presumably his wife) and with Estella and Ann (presumably their children (12).

He was a builder when he was enlisted (9).

Description

He was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and dark hair (9).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 28 August 1862 (1, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (9). He served in company F (1).

He was promoted on 1 January 1863 to second sergeant (1, 7, 9).

On 19 March 1863, he was absent on furlough (4).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 30 men who had more than fifteen months to serve who were willing to reenlist (2). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (6).

Sinex also detailed him on the 30th for duty in the ambulance train, replacing John Hamill (3, 5 [Col Gregory, not Sinex]). He was still there in September (?) 1864 (5).

He was discharged on 1 June 1864 or 1 June 1865 by general order (1, 8 [1 Jun 64]).

After the war

On 7 July 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (10, 13).

In 1870, he was living in Richland Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with his wife Marion and daughter Estella (14). He was a farmer, and owned $3,500 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property (14).

On 12 June 1873 [?], his widow, Marion B Mansfield, applied successfully for a pension (10, 13).

In 1880, his widow, Marion B Mansfield, was living in Ohio Township, Morris County, Kansas (15). She was living with her daughter Estella (15).
