Nicholas Million

Name

The descriptive roll records his name as 'William Nicholas', but the third descriptive roll explicitly says that is an error for 'Nicholas Million' (4).

Before the war

He was born in June 1836 (12). He was 27 years old when he was enlisted (2, 3, 4, 5, 8 [57 in ?1894], 9 [57 in ?1894], 10 [34 in 1870], 11 [43? in 1880], 12 [63 in 1900], 13 [73 in 1910], 14 [57 in ?1894]). He was born in France (2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 [Germany], 12, 14).

When he was enlisted, he was a clerk (2, 4, 5).

He immigrated in 1863 (12).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, dark eyes, and light hair (2, 4, 5).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private on 7 October 1864, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3, 4, 7). He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania (2, 4, 5). His enlistment was credited to the 18th congressional district (2, 4, 5). He served as a private in company B (1).

He was wounded on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia (1, 3, 5).

He was absent when the regiment mustered out (1, 3). He was discharged on 27 August 1865 (7). He had served for eleven months (8, 9, 14).

After the war

On 12 September 1865, and again on 20 March 1907, he successfully applied for a pension (6, 7).

In 1870, he was living in the 18th ward of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois (10). He was living with his wife Louisa and their daughter Louisa (10). He was a confectioner (10).

In 1880, he was living at 2015 Franklin Avenue, St Louis, Missouri (11). He was a confectioner (11). He was living with his wife Louise, and their children Maddie [?], Josephine, Ferdinand [?], and John (11).

On 24 April 1894, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (8, 9, 14). He was admitted from Missouri (8, 9, 14). He had a gunshot wound of the shoulder (8, 9, 14). He was receiving a pension of $12 per month (8, 9, 14).

In 1894, he was present in the Western Branch of the National Soldiers Home (14).

According to the 1900 census, he was married in 1884/1885 (12). If so, this is presumably a second marriage.

On 22 January 1896, he was discharged from the Western Branch of the National Soldiers Home (8).

In 1898, he was present in the Northwestern Branch of the National Soldiers Home (9).

In 1900, he was living in the Northwest Branch of the National Soldiers Home, in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin (12).

In 1910, he was living in the National Soldiers Home in Danville, Vermillion County, Illinois (13). He was widowed (13).

He died on 7 October 1913 (7).
