He was born in August 1828 (14). He was 36 years old when he enlisted in 1864, and 51 on 26 June 1880 (2, 3, 5 [20], 6 [30], 7 [20], 11 [36 in 1860], 12 [42 in 1870], 13 [57 in 1880], 14 [71 in 1900], 17 [23 in 1850]). He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (2, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17). His parents were Adam and Eve Mock (3).
He married Hannah Stambaugh (3). They had five children living in 1898 (3):
In 1850, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (17). He was a laborer (17). He was living with his wife Hannah (17). They had been married within the year (17).
In 1860, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a shoemaker, and owned $100 in real estate and $100 in personal property (11). He was living with his wife Hannah, and with children WIlliam, Mary, Sarah, and Alice, along with George Carl (11).
When he enlisted, he was a shoemaker (2, 5 [farmer], 7 [farmer]).
He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had hazel eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion (2, 3, 5 [5'7-1/2", dark complexion], 7 [5'7-1/2", dark complexion]).
He was drafted (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7). He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private on 21 September 1864, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, for one year (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (5, 7). He served as a private in company B (1, 2, 3). He reported for duty on 8 October 1864, and was part of a group of drafted men and substitutes forwarded from Biddle, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on 12 October 1864 (2).
On the November/December muster roll, he is reported as owing $23.25 for losing his gun and accoutrements (2). He later reported that he had suffered an accidental back injury on 1 November 1864 (3). While he and some other soldiers were carrying a log to build a tent (presumably to build wooden walls, using the tent as a roof), they dropped one end, knocking him down (3). He discovered his back injury after they carried him to his tent (3). He was treated in the camp hospital (3). Perhaps this is why Mock lost his gun then.
Although the regimental records don't mention any injury to him, Alva Bowen remembered seeing him injured, and described it years later in this way:
"I well remember that some time between the first + fifteenth of December 1864 our Command was on a raid on the Weldon Rail Road, and I saw claimant [sc. Samuel Mock] on said raid, and he was suffering from effects of an injury which he had received in his back some time in November 1864. When I saw him on the Weldon Rail Road raid he was unfit for service, was unable even to carry his gun or anything except his blanket and could only walk in a stuping [sic] position. I also saw him when he first recd the injury to his back in Nov. 94 + I asked him what ailed him and he said he had recd an injury to his back by assisting in carrying logs for winter quarters, by his comrades [sic] letting the one end of the log fall while he had the other end. When I saw him at the time of the Weldon Rail Road raid we were returning to our quarters near the Yellow House in front of Petersburg Va and he was scarcely able to get along, and I feared that he would not be able to reach Camp again." (3)
He was discharged at Washington DC, in accordance with general order 94, War Department, on 20 May 1865 (1: 20 May, 2: 25 May, 4: 25 May, 6 [30 May], 8 [30 May]). He had last been paid through 31 December 1864, and his clothing account had not been settled since he had enlisted--$51.82 had been advanced (2). He was mustered out effective 30 May 1865 (2, 3).
When he returned from the army, he was suffering chronic diarrhea (which he continued to suffer for many years), and "was broken down very much" (3). He received a pension, certificate 388,180 (3). He was a shoemaker and a farmer (3).
In 1870, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (12). He was a shoemaker, and owned $1,500 in real estate and $300 in personal property (12). He was living with his wife Hannah, and children William, Mary, Sarah, Alice, David, and Harry (12).
In 1880, he was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (13). He was a farmer (13). He was living with his wife Hannah and children Sarah, Alice, David, and Harry, and a granddaughter (13).
On 28 June 1880, he successfully applied for a pension (9, 10).
Hannah Mock died on 23 August 1886 (3).
Samuel Mock was married to Fanny Guyer on 20 December 1887, at St Clairsville, Pennsylvania, by E S Hassler (3). He was 59 years old, was a farmer, and lived in East Saint Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3). She was 46 years old, had been born to Henry and Hether Guyer, and lived in South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3). They had no children (3).
In 1890, he was living in Waterside, South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). He had a rupture and rheumatism (8).
In 1900, he was living in South Woodbury, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (14). He was apparently not working (14). He was living with his (second) wife Fannie, and her mother (14).
He again applied for a pension on 27 [?] February 1907 (9).
Samuel S Mock died on 28 June 1907 (3, 9).
On 24 February [??--perhaps July?] 1907, Fanny Mock, his widow successfully applied for a pension (9, 10).
In 1908, Fanny Mock was 64 years old, and lived in Waterside, South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3). Samuel had left Fanny Mock $171.75 in personal property, and about 30 acres near Waterside; she also owned a small lot at the north end of Waterside (3). The properties had fences but no buildings (3). The income from the property was at most $50 to $75, and $24 was paid annually to Fanny Mock's mother as a dowry (3). It was also encumbered by a judgment in favor of Samuel B Fluke, which was originally about $350 (3).
In 1910, his widow, Fannie Mock, was living in South Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (15). She was living with her mother (15).
In 1920, his widow, Fanny Mock, was living in Woodbury Borough, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (16).
Fanny Mock died on 25 September 1921 (3).
