Augustine Charles Montgomery

Before the war

He was 23 years old when he enlisted (3, 16 [32 at death in 1870], 17 [12 in 1850], 18 [20 in 1860], 19 [32 in 1870]). He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio (3, 17, 18, 19).

In 1850, he was living in ward 4, Southwark, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (17). He was living with his parents, David and Sarah Montgomery, and with Isabella Montgomery (presumably his sister) (17).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (18). He was living with his parents, David and Sarah Montgomery (18).

When he enlisted, he was a carpenter (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 7-3/4 inches tall, had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service for three years in company E on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania (1, 3). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Colonel Reiff (3).

He was promoted for soldierly conduct, to corporal, on 25 February 1862, replacing Francis O Dell, who had been promoted (2, 3).

He fought, as a corporal, at the battle of Gettysburg (5).

He was at Camp Convalescent, Alexandria, Virginia, on 8 September 1863, when Lieutenant Colonel Sinex asked for his return (6).

On 27 September 1863, he returned to duty (9).

On 8 December 1863, he was reduced to the ranks because he had disobeyed orders (2, 3, 8, 10).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (7). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (11).

He was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness, and was a prisoner from 5 May 1864 to 10 December 1864 (1, 3, 12, 13 [wounded]).

He was discharged 25 April 1865, at Weldon Railroad, Virginia, when his term expired (1, 4). I don't know why he was discharged so late. The company E register of discharges has him listed with a group of men discharged in September 1864, but has no date for his discharge.

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). He was living with his parents, David and Sarah Montgomery, and with one other person (19). He was a house carpenter (19).

On 25 August 1870, he died, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of cholera asphyxia (16). He was then a carpenter, and was single (16). He died at (or was buried from) 1427 South 10th Street (16). He was buried on 27 August 1870, at Union Cemetery, 6th and Washington, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

David C Montgomery, his father, died on 29 September 1881, of chronic pneumonia (20). He died at, or was buried from, 1429 South 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (20). He was buried at the 6th Street Union Cemetery (20).

On 2 January 1882, his mother, Sarah J R Montgomery, applied successfully for a pension (14, 15).
