He was 42 years old when he was enlisted (8, 9 [44 in 1863], 10 [44 in 1863], 13 [47 in 1860], 16 [60 at death in 1879]). He was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (8, 10, 13).
In 1860, he was living in the 14th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was a bartender, and owned $200 in personal property (13). He was living with his wife Susan, and (presumed children) Laura, Harry, Maria, Newell, Thomas [?], and Amos (13).
When he enlisted, he was a bookkeeper (8, 9 [clerk], 10). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enlisted (9).
He was 5 feet 5-1/4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (8, 9 [5'6-1/2"], 10).
He was mustered into service on 11 September 1861 (1). He was enlisted on 13 January 1862 (8). (One of those dates is obviously wrong! The Pennsylvania Archives cards have yet another date: 16 December 1861 for both enrollment and mustering (9) :-(.) He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sinex (8). He was mustered into service by Captain Sellers (8). He served in company D (1).
On 18 March 1863, he returned to duty from being absent sick (4).
He was promoted to corporal when Thomas Hallowell was killed, on 13 December 1862 (7).
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11). He was then a corporal (11).
He was promoted to fifth sergeant on 27 October 1863, replacing William Carpenter (2, 5, 6 [26 Dec 63], 10 [to date from 26 Dec 63]).
He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 10). He was reenlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Carpenter (10).
He was promoted, and on 1 January 1864, Isaac Thomas replaced him as fifth sergeant (3).
He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia (1, 9).
He was mustered in on 26 December 1864, by Lieutenant Swan, but the descriptive roll doesn't say why he was mustered in then (10).
He was absent, in hospital, at muster out (1, 9). He was then a sergeant (1, 15).
On 13 August 1869, he applied successfully for a pension (12, 15).
In 1870, his wife, Susan Mooney, was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). She was a dressmaker (14). She was living with (presumably her children) Maria, Newell, Amos, and Mary, and with Jane Smith and her family (14).
In fall 1874, his widow, Susan S Mooney, was living at 1210 Carlisle Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17).
The Amos Mooney who died on 24 May 1879, at Philadelphia Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of phthisis, is presumably not this Amos Mooney (16).
In the fall of 1879, Susan Mooney was living at 909 Ontario Street (17). Amos H Mooney, a clerk, and Newell F Mooney, a painter, were also living there (17).
On 16 April 1884 [?], his widow, Susan S Mooney, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (12, 15).
