James Moynehan

Before the war

He was born on 16 August 1839, to Michael Moynahan and Anna Smyth (10, 11, 12). He was 23 years old when he was enlisted (7, 10 [52 in 1894], 11 [74 yrs 6 mos. 5 days at death], 12 [60 in 1900], 13 [70 in 1910], 16 [42 in 1880]). He was born in Queens [?] County, Ireland (7, 10, 12, 13, 16).

In 1855-1857, he immigrated to the US (12 [1855], 13 [1857]). He was naturalized by 1900 (12).

He was a gardener when he was enlisted (7).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-3/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light brown hair (7).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 19 November 1861 (1, 7, 10). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Gilbert (7). He served in company G (1).

He was promoted from the ranks to eighth corporal on 3 September 1862 (5).

On 23 February 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty at Windmill Point Hospital (2).

He was wounded by gunshot on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (1, 8, 10). He was then a corporal (8).

He was transferred on 15 March 1864 to the Veterans' reserve corps by general order number 105 (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 [discharged 16 March, reenlisted 18 November 1864]). He was then a corporal (1). He served as Lance Sergeant in company A of the 21st Veterans' Reserve Corps (2, 10). He was discharged on 10 November 1865, at Trenton, New Jersey (10).

After the war

On 16 January 1866, he applied successfully for a pension (9, 15).

In 1868, he married Rebecca [unknown surname] (12, 13). In 1900 and 1910, she had had seven children, all of whom were alive (12, 13).

In 1880, he was living in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (16). he was living with his wife Rebecca, children Jim [??], William, Charles, and George, and with Mary J Smyth (16). He was apparently not working (16).

On 27 December 1894, he applied to Ellis Post 6, Germantown, of the Grand Army of the Republic (3, 10). He was living at 139 East Duval Street, Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a gardener (10).

In 1900, he was living at 142 Duval Street, Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and their children William, Charles, George, Anna M, David, and Rebecca (12). He was a gardener (12).

In 1910, he was living at 142 East Duval Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and their children William, Anna, David, Rebecca, and granddaughter May (13). He was a gardener, for a private family (13).

On 21 February 1914, he died of arteriosclerosis, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9, 10. 11). He was living at 142 East Duval Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was a retired gardener (11). On 25 February 1914, he was buried on 25 February 1914, at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 11).

On 5 March 1914, his widow applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 15).

In 1920, his widow, Rebecca Moynehan, was living at 142 East Duval Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with their children William, Anna, David, and Rebecca, and granddaughter May E (14).
