Samuel Nicodemus

Before the war

He was born on 12 September 1840, in North Woodbury Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania, to George Nicodemus and Mary Shontz (9, 12). He was born in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11). He was 24 years old when he was enlisted (4, 5, 8 [69 in 1910], 9 [59 in 1900], 10 [40 in 1880], 11 [30 in 1870]).

In 1850, he was living in Herston Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his parents George and Mary Nicodemus, and others (presumably his siblings) (12). He had attended school within the year (12).

He was a farmer when he was enlisted (4, 5).

Description

He was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (4, 5).

During the war

He was mustered into service on 9 August 1861 in the 62nd Pennsylvania (1).

He was reenlisted (presumably as a veteran volunteer) on 15 February 1864 (4, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Licken Run, Virginia, by Lieutenant Adams (4, 5). He was mustered in by Captain Gentry (4, 5).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company M of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st (1, 15). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (2). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (3). He was then absent, as a private (3). He served as a private in company K (1).

He was wounded in the thigh (1, 12).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent sick (16). At the end of June 1865, he was absent sick, in Pittsburg Hospital (17).

He was absent, wounded, when the regiment mustered out (1).

He also served in company B of the 6th Veterans' Reserve Corps (6, 15).

After the war

On 14 September 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 15).

On 26 February 1867, he married Mary Stoner, in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12). They had six children (12):

In 1870, he was living in Middle Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a farmer, and had $600 in personal property (11). He was living with his wife Mary, and children Harry [?] and Edward, and with one other person (11).

In 1880, he was living in Martinsburg Borough, Blair County, Pennsylvania (10). He was working on road repairs for the Pennsylvania Railroad (10). He was living with his wife Mary, children Harry, Edward, and Charles, and a niece (10).

In 1890, he was living in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (14). He had been wounded in the thigh (14).

His wife Mary died on 10/12 April 1894, in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12).

On 19 January 1896, he married Sarah Ann Brumbaugh (12). She died on 9 October 1898, in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12).

In 1900, he was living in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (9). He was a farmer (9). He was widowed (9). He was living with his sons John, Samuel, and Charles, and with several servants (9).

In 1904/05, he married Elizabeth [unknown surname] (8). This was his third marriage, and her second (8). In 1910, she had had seven children, six of whom were living (8).

On 20 [?] February 1907, he again applied for a pension (15).

In 1910, he was living in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (8). He was working in a railroad shop (8). He was living with his wife Elizabeth (8).

He died on 8 February 1919, in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12, 15). He was buried in Spring Hope Cemetery, Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12).

In 1920, his widow, Elizabeth Nicodemus, was living in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living with her daughter Dorothy and Dorothy's family (7).

On 14 June 1920, his widow, Elizabeth S Nicodemus, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 15).
