Bates lists three James Nugent's
James Nugent (A) was transfered to company F on 16 February 1864 (special order 4, HQ 91st PA, 16 Feb 64) (3). This is inconsistent with Bates' claim he was discharged on surgeon's certificate. (He may have been mistakenly transferred to company A when he reenlisted (see fact of the week #102).) To make matters worse, my transcription of the 1890 census has a James Nugent in company I, discharged in April 1865. I have assumed that the company D and F James Nugent's are the same person, which the pension index card (14) confirms.
He was 27 years old when he was enlisted (10 [27], 12 [29], 13 [29 in 1863], 15 [57 in 1898], 19 [53 at death in 1898]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12, 13, 15, 19).
He was a moulder when he was enlisted (13).
He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, light eyes, and dark hair (12, 13 [5'9"]).
He also served in company B of the 20th Pennsylvania Infantry (15, 17, 18).
He was enlisted and mustered into service on 24 September 1861 (1, 10 [mustered in 24 Jul 61, enlisted 24 Sep 61], 17). He was enlisted for three years, by Captain Dye, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 12). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He served initially as a private in company D (1).
He was transferred to company F on 31 October 1861 (9, 10, 17).
He was promoted to sergeant on 1 November 1861 (11).
He was reduced to the ranks on 10 June 1862 (11, 12).
On 19 April 1863, he was sent to the corps hospital (6).
He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 1 January 1864 (1, 10, 13 [30 Dec 63], 18). He was reenlisted for three years, by Lieutenant W H Carpenter, at Warrenton Junction, Virginia (10, 13).
On 27 April 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 April 1865 (1, 4, 10).
On 16 June 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, effective 1 June 1865 (1 [1 June], 5 [effective 16 June], 10 [effective 1 Jun], 18 [9 Jun]).
On 24 June 1865, he began a furlough, which expired on 9 July 1865 (8).
He was absent when the regiment mustered out (1, 10). According to the 1890 census, he was discharged in April [??] 1865 (7). He had served for nineteen months (15).
On 31 October 1885, he applied successfully for a pension (15, 17, 18).
In 1890, he was living at 1600 South Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).
On 3 December 1890, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (15). He had a gunshot wound in his face (15). He was receiving a pension of $6 per month (15).
He died of valvular disease of the heart, on 2 February 1898, in Philadelphia or in the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home (15, 18, 19 [Philadelphia]). He was single (19). He was a stevedore (19). He died at, or was buried from, 1545 South Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). On 7 February 1898, he was buried in section A, range 3 of the Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16, 19).
