He was born on 19 April 1824, in Menallen, Adams County, Pennsylvania, to Heinrich Orner and Sarah Knause (2 [a], 3, 6, 8, 10 [York Cty]). He was christened on 13 June 1824 (2 [a]). He was 44 years old when he was enlisted (3, 6 [35 in 1860], 8 [26 in 1850]).
In 1850, he was living with his aunt, Sarah Orner, in Menallen, Adams County, Pennsylvania (2 [d], 8). He was a l[aborer] (8). He was living with his wife Christina, whom he had married within the year (8).
On 12 September 1852, he married Christina Lauver (2 [c]). She died on 13 July 1857 (2).
On 10 August 1858, he married Juliann Guise (2). They had three children (2):
In 1860, he was living in Menallen, Adams County, Pennsylvania (2, 6). He was a day laborer (6). He owned $500 in real estate and $150 in personal property (6). He was living with his wife Julia (6).
He was a laborer when he was enlisted (3).
He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, black eyes, and dark hair (3).
He was drafted from Adams County, in the Sixteenth Congressional District (1, 3). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (3). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1).
He left the regiment after Lee's surrender, because he was very ill and believed that the war was over (4). Although he was absent only eight hours, he was charged with desertion, but the charge was removed by act of Congress in 1872 (4).
He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1).
He died on 27 July 1865, because of a disease he had contracted in the line of duty (2 [b], 4). (Apparently, some Civil War records claim he died on 18 April 1865, of illness (2).) He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville (2).
His widow, Julia Orner, successfully applied for a pension on 23 January 1865 (2, 5, 9).
In 1870, his widow Julia Orner was living in Butler Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office Menallen) (2, 7). She was a domestic servant, living with Christian Deardorff and others, including her son John Orner (7).
Congress removed his desertion charge on 23 April 1874 (4).
His second wife, Juliann Guise Orner, died on 30 March 1874 (2).
At least one of his children applied for a pension in June 187?, and received it (2, 5, 9).
On 9 October 1874, his two sons were admitted to the White Hall School, Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (2 [g]).

WHEREAS Daniel Orner, late a private in company H, ninety-first regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers, stands charged on the records of the Adjutant's General's Office with desertion;
And whereas the said Daniel Orner was on duty with his regiment until after the surrender of Lee, in April, anno Domini eighteen hundred and sixty-five, and left his regiment because of severe illness, and because he shared in the general belief that the war had then closed, and was absent from his regiment but eight hours, and afterward died from the effects of the disease contracted in the line of his duty: Therefore,
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the adjutant general is hereby authorized and directed to remove the charge of desertion against Daniel Orner, late private in Company H, ninety-first regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers.
