Before the war

He was born in April 1842 (5). He was 21 years old when he was enlisted (4, 5 [58 in 1900], 6 [68 in 1910]). He was born in Germany (4, 5, 6).

He immigrated in 1862 (5) or 1863 (6). By 1900, he was a naturalized citizen (5, 6).

He was a black[smith?] when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3). He was enlisted and mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 15 July 1863 (1, 3, 4, 7). He served in company K of the 118th Pennsylvania (3, 4, 7 [and co.A]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). His service was credited to the Fourth Congressional District (4).

He was captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia, on 2 June 1864 (3).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania to the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 3, 4). He served in company G of the 91st Pennsylvania (1).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 7).

After the war

On 16 July 1880, he successfully applied for a pension (7).

He married Dorothea [unknown surname], either in 1895/96 (5) or in 1864/65 (6). This was the second marriage for both of them (5). In 1900, she reported having had five children, 3 of whom were alive (5). In 1910, she reported having had one child, who was alive (6).

In 1900, he was living at 3150 Waltham [?] Street, ward 25, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was an engineer (presumably a stationary engineer, given the 1910 census) (5). He was living with his wife Dorothea, and daughter Anna Groll (5).
