George S Phillips

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). He was 27 years old when he was enlisted (4).

He was a cordwai[ner] when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 (?) inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 13 November 1861 (1, 4). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). He was mustered in company H (1). He had rifle number 39 (4).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (6). He and Stephen Whinna briefly relieved William C Reiff and Jim Thompson from about midnight until 2 AM on 2 July, since Reiff and Thompson couldn't stay awake (7).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer (1).

On 6 October 1864, he was promoted to corporal (2, 8).

He was wounded on 27 October 1864 at Boyndton Road, Hatcher's Run, Virginia (1, 3).

He died on 18 November 1864, in Washington DC, of those wounds (1, 3, 4, 5, 9). Since the Philadelphia death records include a record of his death, he was probably buried in Philadelphia (9).

On 9 February 1865, a minor dependent applied successfully for a pension (8).
