John Pomeroy

In 1848/49, he married Eliza [unknown surname] (10). In 1900, she had had ten children, seven of whom were alive (10).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and sandy hair (5). He was freckled (5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 16 September 1861 (1, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Smith (5). He served in company C (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (7).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer (1).

On 26 March 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 March 1865 (1, 2, 4).

On 23 March 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 7 April 1865 (3).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1).

After the war

In 1880, he was living at 933 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was a morocco finisher (9). He was living with his wife Eliza, and children Samuel, George, Clara, Harry, Sallie, Edward, and Ella (9).

In 1890, he was living at the rear of 933 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11).

On 15 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 12).

In 1900, he was living at 1 Rifton Place, ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a morocco worker (10). He had been out of work for 10 months in the previous year (10). He was living with his wife Eliza and son George (10).

On 30 July [?] 1909, his widow, Eliza Pomeroy, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 12).
