Joseph H Prickett (or Brickett)

Note

Bates (1) has a Joseph Brickett in company K, who was transferred to company E, and a Joseph Prickett in company E, mustered in on the same day. I suspect they are the same person.

Before the war

He was 32 years old when he enlisted (3 [35 in 1863], 8 [32], 14 (30 in 1860)). He was born in Camden, New Jersey (3, 8 [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania], 14 [PA]).

In 1860, he was living in the 1st ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was a carpenter (14). He was living with his wife Catherine, and children Mary, George, James, and Lewis (14).

He was a carpenter (3, 8). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (8).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3, 8 [5'4", sandy complexion, blue eyes, light hair]).

During the war

He was enrolled and mustered into service as a private on 16 October 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 8). He served as a private, initially in company K (1).

He was transferred to company E on 24 December 1861 (1, 8, 10).

On 12 March 1863, he was sent to the division hospital (5).

On 26 September 1863, he was reported returned from hospital for duty (6).

He re-enlisted for three years as a veteran volunteer, at Bealton, Virginia, on 24 December 1863 (3, 8 [26 Dec 63]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Swann (3).

He was shot in the head while charging the enemy works at Petersburg Virginia on 18 June 1864, and died on 21 June 1864 of those wounds (1, 2, 3 [which lists him as killed in action]; 4 has 20 June; 8, 9).

He was buried at City Point National Cemetery, Virginia, section C (4). The Record of the Federal Dead lists him as being originally buried on Prince George Road, one-half mile east of Meade Station; other soldiers from this same area were moved to Poplar Grove Cemetery, but most of them are now listed as unknown soldiers at Poplar Grove (7, 12).

On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning his death (and fifteen others), and sympathizing with their families (11).

After the war

On 11 November 1864, his widow, Catherine Prickett, successfully applied for a pension (13, 14).

On 2 September 1867, Catherine Mead, his minor dependent, successfully applied for a pension (13, 14).
