Before the war

He was born in Stoltest [?], Germany (7 [Prussia], 10, 11, 14 [Prussia]). He was 28 years old when he was enrolled (7 [44 in 1880], 8, 10, 11, 13 [74 in 1910], 14 [35 in 1870]).

He immigrated to the United States in 1854 (13).

He was a sargen[t] when he was enlisted (10, 11).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-3/4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and black hair (10, 11).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 8, 10, 11). He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private on 10 July 1863, in the 62nd Pennsylvania, at Alleghany County, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 8, 10, 11). He was enlisted for three years (10, 11). His service was credited to the 22nd congressional district (10, 11).

On 25 November 1863, General Bartlett detailed him as a nurse (6).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company M of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 8, 16). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (3). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (4). He was then present, as a private (4). He served in company K, initially as a private (1).

He was still detailed as a nurse in September (?) 1864 (6).

On 30 April 1865, he was still detailed at the division hospital (17).

On 16 June 1865, he was promoted to hospital steward, effective 7 June 1865 (1 [7 June], 5 [effective 5 June], 8 [7 June], 15, 16, 18 [27 June]).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with the regiment (1, 2). He was then a hospital steward (1, 2).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the second precinct of Birmingham, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (14). He was a barber [?] (14). He owned $2000 in personal property (14). He was living with his wife Laura and his daughter Otilia [?] (14).

In 1880, he was a sargeant, living at 1713 Carson Street, Pittsburgh (26th ward), Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (26th ward, precinct 1) (7). He was living with his wife Laura, and five children (7):

Two other people were at the same house: August Stephan (20, born Prussia, a barber), and Mary Stephan (18, born Pennsylvania, boards) (7).

He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 17 January 1888 (2, 9, 16).

In 1890, he was living at 118 18th Street, Pittsburgh (26th ward), Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (12).

He again applied for a pension on 15 March 1907 (2, 16).

In 1910, he was living at 1016 Sarah Street, Pittsburg (17th ward), Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (13). He was a widower (13). He was a naturalized citizen (13). He was a physician, in general practice (13).

He died on 16 January 1917, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2, 16).
