Owen Roberts

Before the war

He was born in December 1846 (7), probably to Owen and Hannah Roberts (9, 10). He was 23 years old when he was enlisted (1, 5 [23 in 1870], 6 [33 in 1880], 7 [53 in 1900], 8 [63 in 1910], 9 [40 in 1850], 10 [51 in 1860], 11 [73 in 1920]). He was born in New York, New York (1) or Pennsylvania (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11).

In 1850, he was living in New Market Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Owen and Hannah Roberts (presumably his parents), and with Laura, Adalia, Annie, and Elizabeth (presumably his sisters) (9).

In 1860, he was living in the 2nd ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with Owen and Hannah Roberts (presumably his parents), and Laura, Adelia, Annie, and Alfred (presumably his siblings) (10). He had attended school in the last year (10).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair (1).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He was enlisted on 31 July 1863 (1). He was enlisted for three years (1). His enlistment was credited to the third congressional district (1).

He may have been enlisted in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. The Owen Roberts in the 118th served in company F (2, 13 [company H]). He was enlisted on 2 August 1862 (13). He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, on 19 June 1864 (2). He was not accounted for when the 118th mustered out (2).

If he did serve in the 118th, he was transferred to the 91st Pennsylvania (1). He served in company C of the 91st Pennsylvania (1).

After the war

On 15 September 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (4, 13).

In 1870, he was living in the second ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was a bookkeeper (5). He was living with several families with different surnames (5).

In 1874/75, he married Phoebe W [unknown surname] (7). In 1900, she had had 5 children, 3 of whom were alive (7); in 1910, she had had 4 children, 3 of whom were alive (8).

In 1880, he was living at 1240 South 5th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was a bookkeeper at a furniture [store? manufacturer?] (6). He was living with his wife Phoebe, and children James Eldon, Howard, and Laura, along with his mother-in-law Hannah (6).

In 1900, he was living at 1240 South 5th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was a real estate agent (7). He was living with his wife Phoebe, and children Eldon J, Howard, and Laura (7).

In 1910, he was living at 1240 South 5th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was not working (8). He was living with his wife Phoebe and daughter Laura (8).

In 1920, he was living at 5131 [?] Newhall Street, ward 22, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Phebe, and his daughter Laura Connelly and her family (11). He was not working (11).

He died on 14 February 1923, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13).

On 7 March 1923, his widow, Phoebe W Roberts, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 13).

In 1930, his widow, Phebe Roberts, was living at 161 West Penn [?] Street, ward 22, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her daughter Elizabeth (12). (Note: this doesn't seem to fit with the 1880 census; perhaps I have the wrong Phoebe Roberts.)
