John Scott

Before the war

He was 25 years old when he enlisted (2 [28 in 1863?], 8 [27 (co.A), 25 (co.E)]). He was born in Dengal [sc. Donegal?] County, Ireland (2).

He was an engraver (2, 8). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (8).

Description

He was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (2, 8).

During the war

He was enrolled and mustered into service as a private on 9 September 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 8). He initially served in company A (8).

He fought at the battle of Gettysburg (5).

He re-enlisted for three years as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 2, 8 [1 Jan 64 (co.A), 26 Dec 63 (co.E)]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Swann (2).

On 16 February 1864, he was transferred to company E from company A (2, 3, 6). He may have been mistakenly transferred to company A when he reenlisted (see fact of the week #102).

On 24 April 1864, he was detailed by General Warren as a mounted pioneer (4, 7 [25 Apr], 9). He was still there in September (?) 1864 (7).

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1).

[Bates lists two John Scott's, one in co.A [not accounted for at muster out] and one in co.E [mustered out with the regiment]. His source obviously missed special order 4, HQ 91st PA, 16 February 1864, which transfers Scott from co.A to co.E.]
