Before the war

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 26 September 1861 (1, 3). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). He served as a private in company D (1).

He was discharged at Alexandria VA on 17 May 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2 [medical board], 3). He had served for nine months (4).

After the war

On 21 January 1880, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (4). He had hydrocele, but was not receiving a pension (4).

In 1880, he was living in the National Military Home, Montgomery County, Ohio (5). He was a cigar maker, but had been out of work for 12 months in the previous year (5).

On 16 June 1881, he was discharged from the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (4).

On 2 September 1881, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).

On 22 July 1890, his widow, Sarah Shultz, applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).
