Before the war

He was 18 years old when he was enrolled (5, 6 [21 in 1863]).

He was a butcher (5, 6). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (5).

Description

He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (5 [dark complexion], 6 [light complexion]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service as a private on 7 October 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowman (4). He served as a private in company B (1).

On 23 February 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty at Windmill Point Hospital (3).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (10).

He was relieved from duty in the Pioneer Corps on 15 August 1863 (2).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 5, 6 [25 Dec]). He was enlisted for three years, by Lieutenant Carpenter, and mustered by Lieutenant Swan (6).

He was reported returned from arrest on 21 April 1864 (7).

He was wounded at North Anna, Virginia (1, 5, 11), on 23 May 1864 (12). He died of those wounds, either on 21 October 1864, or (according to his burial record and the consolidated morning report) on 31 August 1864 (1, 5, 9).

He was buried in the National Cemetery, Arlington Virginia (1).

After the war

On 14 April 1870, his father applied successfully for a pension (8).
