John Stewart

Before the war

He was 19 years old when he was enlisted (6, 11 [22 at death in 1864]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 11).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (6).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 20 August 1861 (1, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (6). He served in company C (1).

He was appointed 4th sergeant on 21 September 1861 (3).

He was appointed first sergeant (4).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer, at 24 December 1863 (1, 7). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (7).

He was commissioned first lieutenant, but never mustered in, on 22 November 1863 (1).

He was wounded near Petersburg, Virginia, on 19 June 1864 (1, 2, 10 [10 June]). He died on 22 June 1864 of those wounds (1, 2, 4 [killed in action 18 Jun 64], 5 [died of wounds 18 Jun 64], 6 [killed in action 18 Jun], 7, 8, 10, 11 [21 June]). According to the company C descriptive book, he was then a first sergeant (4, 5). He was single (11).

His body was sent home for burial (5). The funeral was held on 3 July 1864, from his mother's residence, at Rawle and McGrath Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 11 [Magreth St]). Members of Chosen Friends' Lodge, I.O. of O.F. were invited to attend (10). He was buried at Odd Fellows' Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11).

After the war

On 15 October 1864, his mother successfully applied for a pension (9).

STEWART.--On the 22d of June, of wounds received on the 10th in front of Petersburg, John Stewart, First Sergeant of Company C, 91st Regiment P.V.V., son of Emily and the late John Stewart, in the 22d year of his age.

The relatives and friends of the family, also the members of Chosen Friends' Lodge, I.O. of O.F., and also all the soldiers of the 91st Regt. in the city, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from the residence of his mother, northwest corner of Rawle and McGrath sts., on Sunday afternoon, at 1 o'clock. Service at the Cemetery at 2 o'clock.
