John Stotsenburg

Before the war

He was 26 years old when he enlisted (2, 9 [the muster-in roll has '36'], 13 [40 at death in 1867], 14 [25 in 1850]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 14).

In 1850, he seems to have been living in the North Mulberry Ward, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with John and Anna Stotsenberg (presumably his parents), and with various others (14). He was a brickmaker (14). (This assumes that the muster-in-roll's age of '36' is correct.)

He married Margaret [unknown surname]. In 1900, she had had 7 children, 4 of whom were alive (17).

When he enlisted, he was a brickmaker (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (2, 9).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private for three years in company E on 3 September 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 9). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Captain Starr (2).

He deserted on 21 August 1862, at Alexandria Virginia (2). He returned to duty under the president's proclamation, on 13 March 1863 (2). He was first present with the regiment on 24 March 1863 (6).

He fought in the battle of Gettysburg (5).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (6). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (8).

He mustered out on 9 September 1864, at Weldon Railroad, Virginia, when his term expired (1, 2, 4, 9, 10).

After the war

He died on 26 June 1867, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of pneumonia (13). He died at or was buried from 907 Cantrell Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was then a brickmaker, and was married (13). He was buried at Machpelah Ground (13).

On 28 June 1869, his widow, Margaret Stotsenberg, applied successfully for a pension (11, 12).

In 1870, his widow, Margaret Stotsenberg, was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). She was living with Mary, Anna, John, William, and George (presumably their children) (15).

In 1880, his widow, Margaret Stotsenberg, was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). She was living with her sons William and George (16).

In 1910, his widow, Margaret Stotsenburg, was living at 2215 South Seventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). She was living with her son George and his family (17).
