Before the war

He was 20 years old when he enlisted (2 [23 in 1863], 9 [20]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 9).

He was a blacksmith (2, 9). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (9).

Description

He was 5 feet 11-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (2), 9 [6'0"].

During the war

He was enrolled and mustered into service as a private in company E on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 9, 10). He was mustered in by Lieutenant Swann (this may relate to his re-enlistment, not his original enlistment) (2). He was appointed corporal on 10 September 1861 (1, 3).

On 6 April 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty with the cattle guard (6).

He fought, as a corporal, at the battle of Gettysburg (5).

He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer (1), on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (2, 9 [26 Dec 63]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter [perhaps William H Carpenter, lieutenant, company K] (2).

He was promoted on 16 September 1864 from corporal to sergeant (1, 3, 4, 9), for soldierly conduct during the 1864 campaign (2, 3).

On 29 November 1864, he went on a furlough, which ended on 9 December 1864 (7).

On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning the death of sixteen comrades, and sympathizing with their families (13). He was president of the committee (13).

On 9 June 1865, he began a furlough, which expired on 24 June 1865 (8).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 10).

After the war

He died on 3 September 1888 (14).

In 1890, his widow, Louisa Stotsenberg, was living at 715 Moss Street, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 11). At least three other people were living there: Harry and John H Stotsenburg (both barbers), and Jacob Schadel (a finisher) (11).

On 31 July 1890, his widow, Louisa Stotsenberg, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (12, 14).
