He married Margaret Knisely (5).

In 1860, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Margaret and (presumed) children Mary Ann, Valentine, Dorothy, Rachel, William, Michael, and Moses (6). He was a farmer, and owned $1,000 in real estate and $300 in personal property (6).

He was a farmer when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 4). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 4). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (4). His service was credited to the 16th Congressional District (4). He served as a private in company G (1).

He was discharged near Washington, DC, by general order 26, War Department, on 1 June 1865 (3).

He died on 22 June 1865 (1, 5). According to Bates, he was buried at the National Cemetery, Arlington Virginia (1). However, according to a list published in the Bedford Inquirer, he was buried at the Mount Zion Cemetery near Pavia, Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (2).

His descriptive list was sent to the hospital on 26 June 1865 (4).

After the war

On 24 August 1865, his widow, Margaret Stufft, applied successfully for a pension (8, 9).

In 1870, his widow Margaret was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living with her (presumed) children Dorothy, Rachel, William, Michael, and Curtin (7). She owned $2,000 in real estate and $200 in personal property (7).

On 9 October 1873, his minor dependent, Joseph C Ickes, applied successfully for a pension (8, 9).
