James Tierney

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, light blue eyes, and dark brown hair (5). He had a scar on his left leg (5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 18 September 1861 (1). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Smith (5). He served in company C (1).

He was appointed corporal on 21 September 1861 (2, 3).

He was wounded on 13 December 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (9). He was then a corporal (9).

He reenlisted on 24 December 1863 as a veteran volunteer (1, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (6).

He returned to duty from Brigade Headquarters on 2 May 1864 (7).

He was killed on picket, on 12 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10). His body was left on the field (4). He was then a corporal (1).

After the war

On 17 October 1868, his father, James Tearney, applied successfully for a pension (11, 12).
