William Tinney

Before the war

He was 35 years old when he enlisted (3, 4, 5 [38 at reenlistment], 8 [65 at death in 1889], 9 [57 in 1880]). He was born in Donagaul, Ireland (4, 5, 8, 9).

He was a laborer (3, 4, 5). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3 [5'4-1/2"], 4 [5'9"], 5 [5'9"]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 23 September 1861 (1, 3 [23 Oct 61], 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sinex (3, 4). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Dye (3, 4). He served as a private in company D (1).

He was wounded on 13 December 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia (1, 3).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (6).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer, on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 3, 5 [26 Dec]). He was reenlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (5).

On 29 November 1864, he was released from arrest and returned to duty (2). George Justice, who was released by the same order, was apparently tried by regimental court martial; perhaps Tinney was also.

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3).

After the war

In 1880, he was living at 2017 South Tenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his son Hugh, Hugh's family, and his son Andrew and a servant (9). He was a laborer (9). He was widowed (9).

On 29 March 1889, he died, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of general dropsy from organic valvular disease of the heart (7, 8). He was widowed (8). He died at, or was buried from, 2029 South 10th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). The funeral was held on Tuesday 2 April 1889, from 2029 South Tenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the residence of his son Hugh Tinney (7, 8). He was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8).
