John J Trimble

Before the war

He was born in September 1843 (9). He was 20 years old when he was enlisted (6, 9 [56 in 1900], 10 [70 in 1910]). He was born in Cecil County, Maryland (6, 9).

He was a book [rest illegible] when he was enlisted (6).

Before the war

He was 5 feet 5-1/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (6).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 1 November 1861 (1, 4, 6, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (6). He was mustered in as seventh corporal (4). He served in company G (1).

He was discharged at Alexandria Virginia, by order of General Wadsworth, on 20 August 1862, to receive a commission as first lieutenant in the 12th New Jersey Infantry (1, 4, 5, 6, 8 [12 Aug]). He was then a corporal (1).

His father's request secured an appointment for him as First Lieutenant of Company F in the 12th New Jersey (3). He was mustered into service on 22 August 1862 (3).

On 3 July 1863, he was wounded in the leg, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (3). According to one account, he was "slightly wounded" [3, p.39].)

He was discharged from the 12th New Jersey Infantry on 30 October 1863 (2, 3 [resigned 31 Oct]). According to Haines, he was "permitted to resign for the good of the service" (3, p.157).

After the war

In 1873/74, he married Annie [unknown surname] (9). In 1900, she had had 2 children, 1 of whom was alive (9).

On 13 January 1876, he applied successfully for a pension (7, 8).

He was living in Chicago in 1892 (3). He was a clerk then (3).

In 1900, he was living on Second Street, Geneva, Kane County, Illinois (9). He was living with his sister-in-law Ella Green, his wife Annie M, their child Alice E (and a boarder) (9).

In 1910, he was living in the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, in Danville, Vermillion County, Illinois (10).

He again applied for a pension on 6 October 1911 (8).

He died on 26 January 1916, at [the Home in ?] Danville Illinois (8).
