Rev James W Troutman [death notice]

[Bedford Gazette, 20 November 1914, page 4]
Rev. James W. Troutman

James Ward Troutman, a son of Henry and Ellen Troutman, deceased, was born in Washington County, Md., October 2, 1832, and died suddenly Friday morning, November 13, at his home in Clearville, aged 82 years, one month and 11 days. He had just returned from Fulton County the day before his death, where he had assisted Rev. A. H. Garland in his meetings. Deceased came to Pennsylvania in 1859, where he met Miss Huldah Willison, who on March 4, 1860, became his wife. This union resulted in seven children, two of whom, with their mother, preceded him to the spirit land. In 1892 deceased was married again to Mrs. Annie Winters of Leydig, Fulton County. To this union were born two children, Marshall at home and a daughter, who died in infancy. Besides his second wife and her son the following children by the first marriage survive: Mrs. E. Florence Fetters of Baltimore, Md., James H. of Pittsburgh, Joseph O. of Flintstone, Md., Jennie of Cumberland and John of Glover's Gap, W. Va. He also has one brother, Frank Troutman, of Cumberland and four sisters living, one in California, one in Keyser [?], W. Va., and two in Martin's Ferry, O.

The funeral took place Monday afternoon in the Clearville Union Church and was conducted by Rev. A. H. Garland, assisted by Revs. J. H. Barney, G. M. Frownfelter and D. G. Hetrick. Interment was made in the cemetery at the church. Deceased was a private in the Civil War, Company I, Regiment 91, Pa. Vol., and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. In 1886 he was licensed to preach in the Christian Church and some years later was ordained to the ministry. Since 1900 he had lived a retired life at Clearville. During this time he gave his attention to raising strawberries, melons and garden truck. Mr. Troutman possessed a remarkable memory and could quote whole chapters of Scripture. He also had a good voice and could sing hymn after hymn without a book. He was firm in his convictions and was ever cheerful which kept him young in spirit.

Gideon.

[proposed pension increase]

[House Report 1135: 'Pensions and increase of pensions for certain soldiers, sailors, and marine of the Civil War and certain widows and dependent children of soldiers, sailors, and marines of the said war. April 11, 1930'. Page 129. Serial Set volume 9197, session volume D, 71st Congress, 2nd Session.

H. R. 5492. Annie Troutman, aged 71 years, whose post-office address is Clearville, Pa., is the widow of James W. Troutman, late a private, Company I, Ninety-first Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry, from September 21, 1864, to May 30, 1865, and who died November 13, 1914.

Claimant and the late soldier were married November 8, 1892.

She is now pensioned as the soldier's widow at the rate of $30 a month under certificate No. 817208.

The medical evidence filed in support of this bill indicates applicant is unable to contribute to her own support by reason of affliction from myocarditis and interstitial nephrititis.

The evdience [sic] also show [sic] that she has title to a house and lot valued at about $900, against which there is an incumbrance of about $450. Her pension is her only source of income.

No one is legally bound to her support.

It is recommended her pension be increased to $40 a month.
