Description

He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (4 [dark eyes, dark hair], 5 [blue eyes, light hair]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 10 September 1861 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (4). He served as a private in company A (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (6).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 5).

On 4 July 1864, he was detailed by Colonel Gregory as a cook at brigade headquarters (2, 3 [5 July]). He was still there in September [?] 1864 (3).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5).
