John Walters

Before the war

He was born in England (4, 7). He was 33 years old when he was enlisted (4, 7 [39 in 1860]).

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with Catharine (presumably his wife), Joseph, William and Mary (presumably their children), and with Renila [?] Fenton [?] (7). He was a potter (7).

Description

He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (4).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 29 October 1861 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Charles L Burr (?) (4). He was mustered in company H (1).

He died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 27 December 1861 (1, 3, 5). The cause of death is unfortunately illegible in the "Register of deaths", but may include "diar[rhea]" (3). According to the death certificate, signed by Charles Houghton, he died of "consumption lungs" (5). He was then a corporal (1). He was buried at Union Kensington, on 1 January 1862 (5).

After the war

His widow, Catherine Walters, applied successfully on 12 June 1863 for a pension (2, 6).
