William Epstein alias Wilbur Wampole

Name

According to the pension by regiment card, he enlisted under the alias 'William F Wampole' (10). However, I wonder whether I've wrongly identified William F Wampole with Wilbur Wampole. Perhaps not--the Pennsylvania Archives Civil War Veterans' Card File does not have a William F Wampole.

Before the war

He was 21 years old when he was enlisted (6, 7 [20], 11 [65 at death in 1909]). He was born in Trenton, New Jersey (6, 7, 11).

He was a clerk (6, 7). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enlisted (7).

Description

He was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and fair [??] hair (6, 7 [dark hair])

During the war

He also served in company K of the 59th PA Militia Infantry, in company E of the 114th PA Infantry, and in the Navy (10).

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 9 or 10 February 1864 (1 [9 Feb], 6 [10 Feb], 7 [9 Feb]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Shipley (6, 7). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Burke (6, 7). He served as a private in company D (1).

On 22 February 1864, the superintendent of the volunteer recruiting service detached him for duty in the recruiting service, at Philadelphia (2, 4). On 27 April 1864, Sinex reported that he had been relieved, but had not yet reported to the regiment for duty (3). On 29 April 1864, he was reported returned from detached service (8).

He deserted from hospital, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 16 August 1864 (1, 5, 7). He owed the US $23.25 for his gun and accoutrements (5).

On 27 March 1865, the regiment dropped him as a deserter (9).

After the war

On 19 August 1890, he successfully applied for a pension (10).

On 24 April 1907, he again applied for a pension (10).

He died, of lobar pneumonia, with senility [and] arteriosclerosis contributing, on 28 April 1909, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was single then, and was a gentleman (that is, not working) (11). He lived at 1128 Wood Street (11). Apprently, he had been in Philadelphia General Hospital for 2 months and 12 days (11). He was buried, on 3 May 1909, from 1860 N Taney Street, at West Laurel Hill Cemetery (11).
