In 1850, he was living in ward 5, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Jacob and Rosanna Winert (presumably his parents), with 8 probable siblings, and others (9). He had attended school within the year (9).

He was a bootmaker when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 3-3/4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He was mustered into service on 16 November 1861 (1, 8). He served as a private in company I (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (5).

On 28 July 1863, he was reported as having been dropped because he was missing in the campaign (probably after 11 June 1863) (2). He had returned by 28 July 1863 (2).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (4).

On 15 April 1864, he returned from being absent without leave (3).

He may have been wounded in January or February 1865 (7).

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 4, 8).

After the war

On 2 January 1902, he applied successfully from Canada for a pension (6, 8).

On 27 January 1909, he again applied for a pension (8).

He died in 1910 (8).
