David Weiss

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was 40 years old when he was enlisted (4 [42], 5 [40], 7 [42]).

He was a brickmaker (4, 7). He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 7-1/4" tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair (4 [5'8", dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair], 7 [5'7-1/4", fair complexion, hazel eyes, black hair]).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 16 September 1861 (1 [co A], 4) or 11 October 1861 (1 [co I], 5, 8 [11 Oct]). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 5). He was mustered in as a private at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 5). He initially served as a private in company A (1, 12).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 1 January 1864 (1, 4, 7 [31 Dec 63]). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (7).

He was transfered to company I on 16 February 1864 (2). He may have been mistakenly transferred to company A when he reenlisted (see fact of the week #102).

On 23 March 1865, he began a furlough, which expired on 7 April 1865 (3).

The regiment forwarded his descriptive list somewhere (7).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1, 5, 8 [discharged 13 Jul]).

After the war

On 24 October 1874, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 12).

On 27 [illegible month] 1885 [?], his widow, Mary Vice, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 10, 12).

In 1890, his widow, Mary Vice, was living as 12 Marsh Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 9). He had had chronic diarrhea (8).
