He was born in December 1839 (4, 15). He was 25 years old when he was enlisted (2, 6 [30 in 1870], 7 [40 in 1880], 8 [60 in 1900], 12 [66 years 4 months 8 days at death]). He was born in Pennsylvania (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 15).
I have two candidates for being this John Yake in the 1860 census; see the 1850 and 1860 census entries for John Yake (apparently) son of John and Mary Yake; and the 1860 census entry for John Yoke (apparently) son of David and Catharine Yoke. (Perhaps the fact that the first John was a stone mason in 1860, as John was in 1900, suggests that he is the correct John.)
He was drafted (1, 2). He was mustered into service as a private on 28 February 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3). He served as a private in company F (1).
He was discharged by general order on 1 June 1865 (1, 2, 3 [29 Jun], 11).
On 12 January 1865, in Pennsylvania, he married Anna May Allwein (7, 15).
They had fourteen children (15, 8, 9). Nine were alive in 1900; eight were alive in 1910 (8, 9).
In 1870, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (6). He was a farmer, and owned $900 in personal property (6). He was living with his wife Anna and children Francis, Joseph, and Mary (6).
In 1880, he was living in Adams County, Pennsylvania (7). He was a laborer (7). He was living with his wife Anna, and nine children (7).
On 23 May 1882, he applied successfully for a pension (13).
In 1890, he was living in Berwick Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office Abbottstown) (3).
In 1900, he was living in Berwick Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a mason, and not been out of work in the previous year (8). He was living with his wife Anna May and three children (8).
On Tuesday 9 January 1906, he died, in his home, in Berwick Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, of uremic coma, and Bright's disease (12, 13). He was a mason and bricklayer (12). He was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where the funeral took place (12). He was buried at the Conewago Chapel (12).
He died on 9 January 1906, in Pennsylvania (15).
On 15 January 1906, his widow, Anna Yake, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 13).
In 1910, his widow, Annie M Yake, was living in Conowago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, with their daughter Catherine and Catherine's family (9).

Mr. John F. Yake, the widely known mason and bricklayer, died at his home along the Baltimore pike in Berwick township, near Bittinger, about 10 o'clock Tuesday morning from Uremic Coma, following Brights disease, aged 66 years, 4 months and 8 days. Mr Yake was stricken unconscious on Sunday night in which condition he remained until his death. He is survived by his wife and eight children--Mrs. Dicks, Mrs. Neuman, Misses Lucy and Mary, and John, of Baltimore; Francis and Harry, of McSherrystown, and Mrs Katie Feeser of Berwick township. The funeral took place at 9 o'clock Thursday morning a Mass of Requiem being celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, this place, of which deceased was a devout member, after which the remains were taken to Conewago Chapel and interred in the cemetery at that place. Mr. Yake was a man widely known and was a good and kind husband and father.
