I know we didn't fly T-37's in
cadets, but years later I had the opportunity to check one out in Flight
Test and it was equipped with some fancy airspeed system so we could pace
new aircraft and check out their airspeed systems. Also had an
interesting flight in one in 1980 when I took some cadets down to Enid to
get their dollar ride. An instructor took me for about an hour and
when I asked if I could land it, he said "sure." I came in, pitched
out, and made a nice landing. Back in the squadron he got a call that
he was written up from mobile for going over 45 degrees in the pitch.
I asked why he didn't tell me ahead of time, and he said, "you were having
so much fun rolling, looping, etc. that I didn't want to spoil it for you!" |

As a matter of possible interest to my classmates, I was shot down in an F-100 over North Vietnam in March 1965. The interesting part of the story is that, unknown to me, I was either the first or second guy who was successfully rescued to a chopper in that war. A retired USAF para-rescue guy attending the University of Alaska wrote a book "PJ's in Viet Nam", about the rescue operations in Viet Nam. He contacted me and asked me for the details of my rescue, which I sent to him. He included my rescue in his book and gave four pages to the story. He also send me a copy of the book. How about that?
