| The United
Spanish War Veterans are holding their first
national encampment at the Worlds Fair.
Capt. William E. English is commander-in-chief of
the veterans organization. President
Roosevelt sent a telegram to the convention
expressing his regrets at being unable to attend.
Several hundred members of the organization are
here, and it is proposing to make the annual
encampment of the Veterans a permanent
institution. |

The United Spanish War Veterans held their first
meeting of their first national reunion in
Congress Hall at the Exposition yesterday. The
meeting opened with an address by President,
Capt. William E. English of Indianapolis, in the
course of which he read a letter from President
Roosevelt, who is a member of the association,
sending cordial greetings and expressing regret
at being unable to attend the reunion. A telegram
reply was sent. The report of the adjutant
general, Col. Russell Harrison, a son of
ex-President Harrison, was heard.Following this a committee
from the ladies auxiliary of the
association, which was meeting in another part of
the building, came into the hall. The members of
the committee were dressed in white and carried
silk American flags. Speeches were heard from
Miss Cornelia Clay of Washington, D.C., chairman
of the committee, and Mrs. Hattie F. Bary, state
chairman for New York. The remainder of the
morning meeting and that afternoon were taken up
with routine business. The association will meet
again in Congress hall at 9:30 a.m. today to
elect officers for 1905 and decide on the next
place of meeting.
