| Dedicated
to the citizens of East St. Louis killed during
World War 1. The sacrifices of the citizen
soldier in the Revolutionary War, Civil War and
Spanish-American War are also noted on the
monument .The dedication was attended by nearly
2,500 onlookers in a pouring rain.The monument
stands seventeen feet high and originally had an
eagle mounted on the top. The eagle has been
missing since the early 1990's. The St. Clair County
Genealogical Society was notified by the Nelson
A. Miles Camp No. 610 of the damaged monument .
An officer of the Society contacted the local
paper which led to a story being published
regarding the damaged monument. Through the
efforts of local government officials the
wonderful monument is standing proud once again.
Photo above was
taken during a Memorial Day service on May 30,
1934. The firing Squad consisted of members of
the American Legion & the Nelson A. Miles
