THE BRANT MILITARY HOSPITAL - Burlington, Ontario

The purpose of this site is to share with viewers the history of the Brant Military Hospital, and preserve its history. Gene Beals, who proposed this site, did so because his great uncle, Joseph T. Crinnion, of St. Louis, Missouri had registered for the draft in 1917, and found ineligible for military service following a physical examination by the draft board, he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps on October 2, 1917 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and served with the Brant Military Hospital Group.

The Brant House, formerly a luxurious summer hotel in Burlington, Ontario, owned by A.B. Coleman and located near Hamilton, was taken into Government possession on August 6th, 1917. The open sunny verandahs, which faced the shore of Lake Ontario, were closed in to make wards and a new wing was added later.

The goal had been to transform it into a convalescent hospital for 350 men, thus a second wing was built in 1919 which was used mostly for wounded soldiers who were brought there after the war as convalescents.

When most of the men had recovered and returned to their home towns, the remaining patients were transferred to other hospitals and Brant Military Hospital was torn down.
