One of the Quad-Cities few remaining
Spanish-American War veterans, George T. Chappee,
88, of 2647 State street, died about 5:15 p.m.,
Friday at the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home,
Quincy.He
had been ill one month and at the home since Oct.
1.
Mr. Chappee was a
retired grocer and had operated a store at West
21st street and Illinois avenue. He also was a
member of the Laborers Local 397, V.F.W. Post
1300 and was a past commander of the
Spanish-American War Veterans post. He also was
one of the first members of the board of the
Cahokia Mound Boy Scout Council.
He was a native of
Jersey county and lived here for 63 years. His
wife, Flora, died last Oct.17. They had been
married 63 years.
Survivors include
a son, Hayden B. Chappee, and a daughter, Mrs.
Arlene Fox, both of Granite City, five brothers,
Louis of Bartlett, N.H., and Evan, Roy, Julius
and Joseph Chappee, all of Protection, Kan.; a
sister, Mrs. Evelyn Brown of Protection; three
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were held
this afternoon. Further information is given in

OBITUARY
George
T. Chappee, 88, of 2647 State St., Granite City,
at the Illinois Soldier Home in Quincy, Jan. 8.
Veteran of the Spanish-American War and was a
past commander of the Spanish American War
Veterans. Survived by a son Hayden B. Chappee and
a daughter Mrs. Arlene Fox Mercer.
