A DAY OF HONORING
VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR
May 15, 1999

A Memorial Service honoring the citizen soldiers who fought to preserve the Union took place on Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery in Collinsville.

Among those remembered were Lt. N. S. McKeen who was wounded in the battle of Stones River and later captured at the battle of Chickamauga. He is one of fifteen Union soldiers who planned and executed the "Little Tunnel" at Andersonville Prison and escaped to Union lines. He is the only Civil War soldier buried at Glenwood Cemetery who received a Congressional Medal of Honor.

George M. McCormick, appointed Corporal on November 1st, 1862. He was captured at battle of Chickamauga, Georgia and also survived the infamous Andersonville prison. He later became a senator of the 47th Illinois District in the early 1900's.

This 34 star U.S. Flag was the typical flag of the United States from 1861 to 1863.

The number of states grew from 33 at the beginning of the Civil War in April of 1861 to 36 when the war ended in 1865.
