Pvt. Bruce V. Cohn (1923-1944)Private Bruce H. Cohn , son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip H. The telegram was received by his mother Wednesday, October 11, from the War Department.

On Friday, October 6, Mrs. Cohn received a wire from the War Department informing her that her boy was wounded in action on Monday, September 18. Then last week the Cohns received a second wire telling them their boy had died from these injuries on September 19.

Pvt. Cohn, 21, entered the Armed Forces in January, 1943, and was first stationed with the cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas. Later he was sent overseas in February of this year, being first stationed in North Africa, then transferring to Italy.

In May 1944, Pvt. Cohn was officially reported as having being wounded in action, and during the latter part of the same month he was presented with the Purple Heart.

The Cohn family last heard from their boy on Tuesday, September 12, at which time he said that he was still in Italy. He went on to say that he had visited Rome, and said, “there is no need to worry; if things keep going as they are at the present, I’ll be home soon.”

Cohn attended the Collinsville Public Schools, and was a member of the Collinsville Township High School graduating class of 1941.

Prior to induction he worked at defense plants at both Denver, Colorado and California.

His brother, Arnold Cohn, is in the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois.
