18 – Year Old Boy Was Member of Merchant Marine
 
William Daukas, 18 - year old member of the merchant marine is missing at sea after an off tanker on which he was stationed was sunk by the enemy in the Caribbean Sea, according to information received by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Daukas, Sr., 812 High Street.

The parents were told of the incident in a letter from Sun Oil Company, which has headquarters at Marcus Hook, Pa.

The letter stated that young Daukas was “missing after enemy action” destroyed the tanker on the evening of February 21, “while proceeding on a voyage in the Caribbean Sea.”

The vessel was sunk, the letter continued, and there were but two known survivors of the crew, the number of which was not given. The two were picked up by another ship.

Daukas has one brother, Joe Jr. His father is employed at Lumaghi No. 2 mine.

Note: Seaman Daukas's remains were never recoverd. His name is listed on the Wall of Honor at the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial at San Pedro, California. The memorial also includes a large bronze sculpture.The black granite wall lists the names of merchant marines lost at sea during war.
