First Lieutenant Vernon L.
Edwards, last week reported missing in action
since November 11 has been reported killed in
action in France on that date. His wife, Mrs.
Betty J. Edwards, 3941 South Grand, St. Louis,
and a mother, Mrs. Ruby Edwards, 246 Seminary
Street were informed Monday morning December 4 by
a second wire from the War Department.Lt. Edwards who was
twenty-six years old landed in France in February
of this year. He had been in service for four
years, having served in the National Guard a year
before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Edwards was a
member of an armored tank group and trained at
Camp Robinson, Arkansas, and Fort Knox, Kentucky.
He received his promotion to First Lieutenant in
July 1942. Attending the schools in this city, he
graduated from CTHS in 1936, and was employed by
Western Union, St. Louis, prior to his induction
into service.
Besides his wife
and mother, Lt. Edwards is survived by one son,
Irl, and two sisters, Virginia Edwards and Mrs.
George Gass Jr.
