S/Sgt. David Jack (1918-1945)S/Sgt. David Jack, outstanding Collinsville athlete was killed on November 4 in an airplane crash in Germany, according to a telegram sent by the War Department to his wife, Drucilla Pyle Jack of Highland. Mrs. Jack received the message last Saturday.

Sgt. Jack was inducted into the Army in July 1943, and was sent overseas in December of 1944. He served as an engineer on both B-24’s and B-17’s and was stationed with the Eighth Air Force in England. At the end of the war he was sent to Denmark with the O.S.S. At the end of his assignment he was flown back to England to await transportation home. Due to a shortage of ships, the lower point men received orders to go to Munich, Germany, with the European Air Transport Service. He left England November 3 and was killed the next day.

Sgt. Jack had received the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster.

Jack was born at Eldorado, Illinois, on April 8, 1913, but spent most of his life in Collinsville, where his parents, Mr. And Mrs. William Jack, died some years ago. He graduated from the Collinsville Township High School and won recognition for his athletic ability during and after his high school years. He married Miss Drucilla Pyle of Highland on April 15, 1939, and the couple lived in Collinsville until his induction. He was employed by the Wohl Shoe Co. in St. Louis for nine years.

Besides his wife, Sgt. Jack was survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Wood, living in Urbana, Illinois.
