S/Sgt. David Jack,
outstanding Collinsville athlete was killed on
November 4 in an airplane crash in Germany,
according to a telegram sent by the War
Department to his wife, Drucilla Pyle Jack of
Highland. Mrs. Jack received the message last
Saturday.Sgt.
Jack was inducted into the Army in July 1943, and
was sent overseas in December of 1944. He served
as an engineer on both B-24s and
B-17s and was stationed with the Eighth Air
Force in England. At the end of the war he was
sent to Denmark with the O.S.S. At the end of his
assignment he was flown back to England to await
transportation home. Due to a shortage of ships,
the lower point men received orders to go to
Munich, Germany, with the European Air Transport
Service. He left England November 3 and was
killed the next day.
Sgt. Jack had
received the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster.
Jack was born at
Eldorado, Illinois, on April 8, 1913, but spent
most of his life in Collinsville, where his
parents, Mr. And Mrs. William Jack, died some
years ago. He graduated from the Collinsville
Township High School and won recognition for his
athletic ability during and after his high school
years. He married Miss Drucilla Pyle of Highland
on April 15, 1939, and the couple lived in
Collinsville until his induction. He was employed
by the Wohl Shoe Co. in St. Louis for nine years.
Besides his wife,
Sgt. Jack was survived by one sister, Mrs.
Elizabeth Wood, living in Urbana, Illinois.
