PFC Baptist Musso, Jr. (1913-1945)Private First Class Baptist “Teen” Musso, thirty-two years old, husband of Mrs. Phillipine Musso of Superior Drive, Belleville, and son of Baptist Musso Sr., of 446 Sumner street, was reported killed in action on Thursday, April 12, somewhere in Germany. The telegram from the War Department was received Tuesday, April 24, by Mrs. Musso at Belleville, and she notified the Musso family here.

Pfc. Musso was inducted into the service of his country on October 26, 1943, and received his infantry training at Camp Howze, Texas. Prior to becoming a member of the infantry, he was stationed with the Army band at Topeka, Kansas and Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was sent overseas in February 1945, first arriving in Scotland, then going to England, then to France, and finally to Germany.

The last letter received from Pfc. Musso by his wife was dated Sunday, April 8, at which time he told his wife that he had had a day off. Pfc. Musso informed his wife that on that day he had received eight letters from her and four from the family. He went on to say, “I am writing this letter as I take a sun bath, everything is okay, so, don’t worry. I think the war might be over in a couple of weeks.”

Pfc. Musso was born in Collinsville, Ill., on January 29, 1913, and lived all his life here. He attended the Webster School and Collinsville Township High School, graduating with the 1932 class. He was a member of the CTHS band, and was known to his friends as “Teen”. He owned and operated a filling station on Vandalia street, near the high school.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Phillipine Musso, his father, Baptist Musso, Sr., three sisters, Mrs. Dora Major, Misses Evelyn and Emily Musso, and five brothers, Tony, Edward, Johnny, all of Collinsville, George Musso, deputy sheriff at Edwardsville, and Lieutenant Albert Musso, stationed with the Army Air Transport Command somewhere in India.
