9th Infantry DivisionPvt. Al J. “ Moz” Paoli
Missing in Action
Overseas Two Months

Pvt. Albert J. Paoli (1825-1944)Pvt. Albert J. “Moz” Paoli, twenty-year old son of Mrs. Ida Paoli, 528 West Main Street, was reported missing in action since Tuesday, October 17, somewhere in Germany, in a telegram received by his mother from the War Department Monday, November 13.

Pvt. Paoli was inducted into the armed forces of his country on July 7, 1943, and received his infantry training at Camp Hulen, Texas. He was sent overseas sometime in September, 1944, being first stationed in England, then moving on to France, Belgium, Ireland, Scotland, and then Germany.

Mrs. Paoli last heard from her boy in a letter postmarked October 5, which she received the latter part of October. Pvt. Paoli told his mother that he had already been in five countries, and hoped to see more. He said, “ I visited Paris, it’s like New York, and for the girls well, it’s like Washington nine to one.” He went on to say that the food “ is very good, but the United States is far better than any country over here.” He told his mother that the people “are friendly, so don’t worry about me, because I am safe. May God bless you mother, my sister Irma, and brother Guido.” Guido is a Petty Officer Second Class, stationed with the Navy somewhere in the Pacific.

Pvt. Paoli attended the Public Grade Schools here, and attended the Collinsville Township High School for three years. After two months had passed in his senior year, he was inducted into the armed forces.

*Although listed on the Missing in Action Tablets at the Netherlands American Cemetery (as shown in top photo), Pvt. Paoli also has a military marker set at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Collinsville, Madison Co., IL.
