| John Reed,
colored, thought to be one of the oldest men in
Madison County died Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at his
home at the age of 104 years 10 months and 14
days. Mr. Reed was born in Collinsville and has
spent almost all his life here. He was born August 14,
1825, and is a Civil War veteran. He has been
receiving a pension from the government for many
years. He is survived by his wife, Sophronia, and
twenty-seven children. Mr. Reed has been married
several times, his previous wives having preceded
him in death.
He has led a very
interesting life. And could tell of many old
happenings. He was a farmer in his younger days,
but has not worked for many years. He has been
without the sight of one eye for years, the eye
having been shot out in a dual he had with Dan
Sims, another Negro.
Funeral services
were held Monday from the family residence 1108
Cedar street at 1 oclock to the African M.
E. Church at 2 oclock. Reverend Turner
officiated. Burial was made in St. Johns
Cemetery.
