James Arthur Savage, Jr.,
son of Mr. And Mrs. J.A. Savage, 247 North
Clinton Street, and husband of Mrs. June Savage,
St. Jacob, Illinois, was killed in action in the
service of his country according to a wire
received by his parents from the Navy Department
on Sunday, May 27.Savage was a fireman first class on
an aircraft carrier and his last mail to his
family was written from the China coast. The
official government message did not state when or
where he met his death.
Fireman Savage was
born in Collinsville on December 31, 1912, and
lived here until eight years ago. He married the
former June Aebuscher of St. Jacob, Illinois on
June 17, 1933, to which union there was born one
daughter, Germaine, nine years old.
Before entering
the service, Savage was employed at the East St.
Louis Key and Boiler Works. He entered the Navy
less than fourteen months ago, and received his
training as a fireman at Great Lakes Naval
Training Station. He received his assignment to
overseas duty about three months after stepping
from civilian life.
Besides his
parents and wife and child, Fireman Savage is
survived by three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Seipp and
Mrs. Sue Anna Lotz, both of Collinsville, and
Miss Julia Savage of East St. Louis: two
brothers, John Henry of Collinsville and Thomas
Savage, with the army in the European Theatre of
Operations.
A third brother,
Pvt. William Savage, was killed March 18 on Iwo
Jima serving with the Marines.
