Fireman 1st Class James A. Savage, Jr. (1912-1945)James Arthur Savage, Jr., son of Mr. And Mrs. J.A. Savage, 247 North Clinton Street, and husband of Mrs. June Savage, St. Jacob, Illinois, was killed in action in the service of his country according to a wire received by his parents from the Navy Department on Sunday, May 27.

Savage was a fireman first class on an aircraft carrier and his last mail to his family was written from the China coast. The official government message did not state when or where he met his death.

Fireman Savage was born in Collinsville on December 31, 1912, and lived here until eight years ago. He married the former June Aebuscher of St. Jacob, Illinois on June 17, 1933, to which union there was born one daughter, Germaine, nine years old.

Before entering the service, Savage was employed at the East St. Louis Key and Boiler Works. He entered the Navy less than fourteen months ago, and received his training as a fireman at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He received his assignment to overseas duty about three months after stepping from civilian life.

Besides his parents and wife and child, Fireman Savage is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Seipp and Mrs. Sue Anna Lotz, both of Collinsville, and Miss Julia Savage of East St. Louis: two brothers, John Henry of Collinsville and Thomas Savage, with the army in the European Theatre of Operations.

A third brother, Pvt. William Savage, was killed March 18 on Iwo Jima serving with the Marines.
